Do You Want to Eat a Toe?

Have you ever put your foot in your mouth?

Thinking about all of my embarrassing moments makes me nearly sick to my stomach.

I’m not easily embarrassed (please don’t take that as a personal challenge to attempt to embarrass me) but as I look back over my life I realize how I’ve embarrassed myself more than anyone else ever has: Stupid things said at THE most inopportune times.

Yep, Im that guy.

God has gifted me with spiritual gift of impulsive speaking;  AKA, talking the heck too much.

Along with this gift comes side effects of off color jokes, angry words, awkward moments in conversations, regret, shame, damaging relationships and hurting one’s reputation.

I have a rather quick mind and an even faster mouth. I am constantly working on myself.

So allow me to let you in on what helps me…

Before you spew out of your mouth that lightning fast thought, ask yourself 4 things:

  1. Is it wrong? – Some things shouldn’t be said…period.

  2. Is this worth it? – Some things you say can cost you in the long run.

  3. Is it necessary? – Some things you say can be unnecessary…so shut it. (Trust me)

  4. Is this the right place? – Some things are too sensitive to be discussed in certain places among certain people.

Proverbs 13:3
Whoever guards his mouth preserves his life; he who opens wide his lips comes to ruin.
